Former Egypt coach Hassan Shehata, a renowned figure in African football, is set to become a technical adviser for 1860 Munich, German media said on Saturday.

Shehata watched a training session for the German second-tier club before attending Saturday's 3-1 league defeat by St.Pauli.

"I've come here to help [the team]. We have to rise next season!" the 63-year-old was quoted as saying by German media.

Shehata is arguably the best football coach in Egypt's history, having guided the Pharaohs to three consecutive African Nations Cups in 2006, 2008 and 2010 - an unprecedented feat in the continent.

However, he then had less successful and brief stints with Egypt's Zamalek, the club where he made his name as a footballer, and Qatari outfit Al-Arabi.

German media said Shehata will monitor 1860 Munich, who are owned by Jordanian investor Hasan Ismaik, during their remaining games in the second-division, after which he should assume his new role.
