Ahly defender Wael Gomaa says he and his teammates admired Orlando Pirates' performance in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final on Saturday.

The Red Devils were on the verge of winning the first leg in Johannesburg when veteran playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika put the visitors upfront with a brilliant curling free-kick just before the quarter-hour mark.

However, Ahly's slender lead was cancelled out by Thabo Matlaba who hit an equaliser deep into stoppage time.

"We worked on keeping a clean sheet," Gomaa was quoted as saying by the club's website.

"The experience of Ahly players will help up secure the title in Cairo next week," he added.

Ahly are favourites to retain their Champions League crown and extend their record to eight triumphs in Africa's elite club competition when they host the Pirates in Cairo 10 November.

Gomaa, however, believes that "the second leg game won't be easy" as the title is still within grasp for both teams.
