Mohamed Abou-Treika, 55, cancelled Godwin Attram’s lead, 52, to split the points with Smouha.

Zizo reinstated the sweeper to his backline as Mohamed Samir started the game playing behind Wael Gomaa and Ahmed El-Sayed. It didn’t bring what the defence needed as keeper Mohamed Aboul Seoud was tested several times.

Ahly took control of the game midway through the first half but failed to convert its domination on the scoresheet, despite clear chances for Mohamed Barakat and Mostafa Selim “Afroto” who got a starting role for the first time this season.

All the action came in the second half. Seven minutes after the break, Attram dribbled past three defenders and chipped the ball over Ahly’s keeper to put the hosts ahead.

Not for too long, as Abou-Treika deflected Moetaz Eno’s shot in the back of the net to level the score to 1-1 three minutes later.

The Reds should have scored twice when Samir’s header went off the bar and Barakat missing the target from less than six yards.

The result leaves Ahly in fifth place with 19 points while Smouha are still at the bottom with nine points.

In the other game of the afternoon, Talae Al-Gaish were held by El-Entag El-Harby 1-1. Togolese striker Dudze Dogbe opened the scoring for Al-Gaish in the 40th minute of the game, but Hussein Hamdy snatched a point for the hosts after scoring a late equaliser in the 85th minute.
