Fans of Egypt's Ahly celebrate and light flares after Emad Meteb soccers the goal against Ivory Coast's Sewe Sport during their African Confederations Cup final soccer match at Cairo stadium (Photo: Reuters)
Here is a list of the team’s most famous last-gasp winners in the last decade:
Abou-Treika against Sfaxien (2006 Champions League final)
This was arguably the most memorable moment in the glorious history of Ahly. Sfaxien were on the brink of winning the Champions League title when classy playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika volleyed home a flick-on from Flavio Amado in the 92nd minute to stun the home crowd in Rades and give the Red Devils a 2-1 aggregate win.
Emad Meteb against Sewe Sport (2014 Confederation Cup final)
Just when it looked as though Sewe Sport would hold Ahly to a goalless draw and win Africa’s secondary club competition after claiming a 2-1 first-leg win in Abidjan, veteran striker Emad Meteb rose at the near post six minutes into stoppage time to power home a header following a pinpoint cross from Walid Soliman, sparking wild celebrations at Cairo Stadium as his side became the first Egyptian outfit to win the Confederation Cup.
Abou-Treika against Zamalek (2007 Egypt Cup final)
Zamalek were two minutes away from winning the Egypt Cup but Abou-Treika forced an extra-time when he struck from close range following a defensive lapse. Ahly went on to win 4-3 in one of the most exciting Egypt Cup finals.
Ahmed Fathi against Talae El-Geish (Egyptian Premier League last round in 2009)
Ahly were about to settle for a 1-1 draw with Talae El-Gaish in their last Premier League match, a result which would have gifted the title to bitter rivals Ismaily, but full-back Ahmed Fathi came to their rescue three minutes into stoppage time.
He cut inside his challenger from the right and blasted home a left-foot shot from inside the area and Ahly added another goal at the death to claim a 3-1 win and force a decider against Ismaily.
Shehab Ahmed against Libya’s Ittihad (2010 African Champions League)
Ahly and Libya’s Ittihad were about to go to penalties to decide an African Champions League last-16 clash in Cairo but midfielder Shehab Ahmed thumped a 30-metre shot past the hapless keeper four minutes into the additional time to give his side a 3-2 aggregate win and a place in the competition’s group stage.
