Zamalek’s technical staff considers resigning after Tuesday’s league defeat against Gouna

Zamalek assistant coach Tarek Soliman said on Tuesday that coach Hossam Hassan and his technical staff are considering resigning following the team’s defeat 2-1 against Gouna in the Egyptian Premier League.

“We are seriously thinking about leaving. The technical staff did its best with the team but the players’ responses did not live up to expectations,” Soliman told the post-match news conference.

“Those players do not deserve the support they get from the fans and technical staff,” he added, before storming out of the conference room after declining to respond to questions from journalists.

Leaders Zamalek extended their win-less run to three games following the stumble against Gouna, a result which threw the title race wide open.

Zamalek, who are eyeing their first league triumph since 2004, remain on top of the table with a four-point lead over arch-rivals Ahly, who could narrow the gap to just one point if they beat Ittihad of Alexandria on Thursday.

Egypt’s all-time leading scorer Hassan took over at Zamalek late in 2009 when they were risking the unthinkable prospect of being relegated to the second division.

He turned around their fortunes and helped them finish second and the team also made a promising start to the current season under his guidance.
