Egypt’s Interior Ministry has threatened to cancel this season’s Egyptian football league if trouble continues to mar domestic matches.
“We have received more than a warning letter from the Interior Ministry. They asked us to warn clubs against the use of fireworks and stirring up trouble inside and outside the pitch,” the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) spokesman told Ahram Arabic on Saturday.
“In the last letter, they affirmed that the league would be cancelled if the current situation continues,” he added.
All football activities in Egypt were halted since the start of the January 25 Revolution for security reasons. As the internal situation became more stable, matches were resumed last month, but several incidents have tainted the competition.
The most of the tournament’s recent games witnessed extensive use of fireworks, additional to misconduct among fans.
