Ahly coach Fathi Mabrouk has said he is "sad" after the team lost the Egypt Cup title to arch-rivals Zamalek, and has vowed to recover the loss in the CAF Confederation Cup competiton.
Prolific striker Basem Morsi scored twice, in the 11th and 34th minutes, to help Zamalek beat Ahly, a victory that marked the league winners' first domestic double (league and Cup titles) since 1988.
"I am sad to lose the Egypt Cup title. We made many defensive mistakes due to missing experienced players like Hossam Ghaly and Walid Soliman," Mabrouk was quoted as saying by the club's official website after the match.
"Also we weren’t lucky enough in some chances against the goal.
"Ahly still have a chance to please fans this season by winning the Egypt Super Cup and the African Confederation Cup," the coach added.
Under the helm of Mabrouk this season, Ahly lost their ninth successive title and 38th overall to Zamalek, who ended an 11-year league drought after clinching their 12th domestic crown.
Defending champions Ahly are to travel to South Africa on Tuesday where they will face the Orlando Pirates in the first leg of the Confederation Cup semi-final on 26 September.
The return leg will be on 4 October at home.
