Soccer Football - Egyptian Cup Final - Al Masry v Al Ahly - Alexandria, Egypt - August 15, 2017 Al Ahly coach Hossam El-Badry gestures Reuters
Ahly coach Hossam El-Badry believes his players’ determination and consistency were the key to clinching the Egypt Cup title, as he dedicated his first-ever domestic Cup as a coach to the fans.
The Reds scored two goals late in extra time to come from behind and earn a dramatic 2-1 victory over Masry, which gave them their first Egypt Cup title in 10 years and completed a domestic double.
"Ahly players have great determination. We weren't lucky as Masry opened the score but our players were quiet and determined to win," El-Badry told DMC TV channel after the match.
"The players' great determination is the main reason behind clinching victories in the dying minutes. I want to thank them for their effort.
"We were the better and most dangerous side but we weren't lucky in the chances against the goal. The big joy is our consistency despite getting the goal in extra time.
"I dedicate the title (the first in my career as a coach) to Ahly fans. I hoped to see them in the stands celebrating the victory.
"The return of the Egypt Cup title to Ahly after 10 years has its own flavour. Also we won't forget the match scenario, especially as it was against a big team," the 57-year-old coach added.
Under the guidance of El-Badry, Ahly won the Egyptian Premiere league title twice (including the last edition), two Egyptian Super Cups, one African Champions league title and one African Super Cup title.
Ahly will now turn their attention to the African Champions League as they eye a memorable treble. They will face Tunisia's Esperance in a mouth-watering two-legged quarter final next month.
"Now our full concentration will be on the African Champions League. We will have some joy in a short vacation and then we will resume our work," the coach concluded.
