A few hours ahead of today’s anticipated friendly against Bayern Munich, Egypt’s Ahly president, Hassan Hamdy, announced that his club is discussing playing two friendlies with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
The Cairo giants will play a friendly with German Bayern Munich in the Qatari capital Doha, and it seems that the club management believes playing big European clubs is an experience worth repeating.
“We are discussing the possibility of playing two friendly matches with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid next summer,” Hamdy, who is heading the club’s delegation in Doha, was quoted as saying by the club’s official website Saturday.
“This kind of game is of great importance for us. We got more fame on the international scene when we played before with Real Madrid, AS Roma and Benfica,” he added.
Six-time African Champions League winners, Ahly, met Real Madrid in 2001 amid the club’s centenary celebrations, under the guidance of current Portuguese coach Manuel Jose, beating them 1-0 at Cairo Stadium.
Ahly, who were founded in 1907, defeated Portuguese giants Benfica 2-1 in 2007 and Italy’s AS Roma 2-1 in 2002.
Atlético Madrid had a visit to Cairo in November 2011 when they thrashed Zamalek 4-1 in the White Knights' ongoing centennial celebrations.
