Ahly and Egypt defender Ramy Rabia
Ahly defender Ramy Rabia returned to the team’s squad for their 6-0 friendly win over second division club Telecom Egypt on Tuesday after a 10-month absence.
Rabia did not start but was fielded as a substitute after 63 minutes. The international defender last played with Ahly 8 January 2018 against rivals Zamalek where he was forced off after 66 minutes, staying on the sidelines because of injury for 281 days.
Rabia suffered a severe groin injury, preventing him from featuring in the 2018 World Cup with Egypt who qualified for the first time in 28 years.
The 25-year-old's return comes amid a defensive crisis for the team. Recently, Ahly’s French coach Patrice Carteron was forced to use left-back Ayman Ashraf in the centre-back position.
Ahly is not allowed to field Rabia in any of their upcoming games as he was not registered in the team’s official players list prior to the start of the season in July. However, he is on the list of awaiting players and has the chance to be enrolled in January.
Ahly’s game against Telecom Egypt was part of the team’s preparations for the CAF Champions League semi-final second leg against ES Setif in Algeria on 23 October. Ahly took a first leg advantage after a 2-0 home victory in Cairo on 2 October.
