The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Friday announced its list of nominees for the CAF Player of the Year award, to be announced at an awards gala in Dakar, Senegal on 8 January.
The 34-man list included three Egyptian names, namely Liverpool’s winger Mohamed Salah, Ahly’s winger Walid Soliman and Masry’s striker Ahmed Gomaa.
Salah, who won the award in 2017, led Liverpool to the 2018 Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid.
Soliman was Ahly’s talisman in the African Champions League but his club also lost the final to Tunisian side Esperance.
Gomaa was an important part of Masry’s adventurous campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup from which the Port Said-based club was knocked out by Congolese side Vita Club at the semi-finals stage.
CAF is no longer presenting the African Player of the Year - Based in Africa Award, as the African football governing body, instead awarding a single prize for the best player, whether they play on the continent or abroad.
The list also includes CAF Champions League champion Anice Badri of Tunisia’s Esperance, Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez, and Liverpool’s Sadio Mane.
