The Egyptian Football Association announced on Friday that Romanian referee Stefan Kovacs will be in charge of the Cairo derby clash between Ahly and Zamalek on Saturday, a postponed game from week 17 of the Egyptian Premier League.

The 35-year-old referee officiated the recent game between France and Iceland in the 2019 EURO qualifiers.

He also officiated 24 games so far this season in the Romanian domestic competitions, the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League.

The Ahly and Zamalek derby, which will be played at Alexandria's Borg El-Arab Stadium, could define the season.

Ahly currently lie second in the league table with 51 points from 22 matches, just two behind Zamalek, with 11 matches left for each in the season

Last week, league leaders Zamalek failed to recover a four-point lead in the teams' table after being held to a 2-2 draw by the Arab Contractors.

Ahly thrashed Petrojet 4-0 in their last league match on 4 March.
