“The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee under the chairmanship of CAF President Issa Hayatou at its meeting on 11 February in Libreville (Gabon) approved a financial support of $150,000 to the families of the victims of the Port Said tragedy,” a statement read on the CAF official website on Saturday.
The violent attack on the Ahly team fans at the close of the 1 February Ahly-Masry match, which left 74 football fans dead and more than a thousand injured, has overshadowed the Africa Cup of Nations 2012.
Since the tragic event, which has been called the biggest disaster in the history of Egyptian soccer, CAF decided to fly its flag at half mast. In honour of the victims a minute of silence will continue to be observed at every match from the quarter finals stage right through to the final of the tournament, set to be played on Sunday.
FIFA has also donated $250 000 that will be paid into a charity account set up by the Ahly team.
