Ahly coach Rene Weiler has expressed his pleasure with the 1-0 win over Tunisia's Etoile Sahel in the 5th round of Group B games of the CAF Champions League late on Sunday, affirming that he achieved his target from the game.
A first-half goal from Junior Ajayi gave Ahly a vital 1-0 home win over Tunisia's Etoile Sahel that lifted them to the summit of their African Champions League group and boosted their hopes to reach the last eight on Sunday.
"I am happy to beat a big team like Etoile Sahel, as our target from the beginning of the game was to win," Weiler told the post game press conference.
"This victory over Etoile Sahel is an important step to reach the Champions League quarterfinals to complete our way in the African road," the Ahly coach added.
The Cairo giants' goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawi sustained a back injury five minutes before the final whistle during the 1-0 victory over Etoile Sahel, but the player was treated inside the pitch and asked to complete the game despite his injury.
"El-Shennawi is a brilliant goalkeeper and he works hard in every game," Weiler said.
"I don't know the extent of his injury yet," the Ahly coach added.
Ahly are at the top of Group B with 10 points, one ahead of Etoile and Sudanese giants Al-Hilal with one match remaining in the group phase.
The Red Devils only need to draw at Al-Hilal's Omdurman fortress in their final match next week to qualify for the quarter finals. A win will see them advance as the group leaders regardless of the outcome of the other match between Etoile and Zimbabwe's Platinum.
