“Cancelling the Egypt Cup is a disaster,” Pharaohs assistant coach Dia’a El-Sayed told the Middle East News Agency Mena Monday.
On Sunday afternoon, the Interior Ministry refused to secure Egypt Cup matches in the aftermath of the country's worst stadium disaster when scores died and hundreds injured at a match in Port Said between Ahly and Masry on 1 February.
The Egyptian Premier League season was cancelled and international and African Champions League matches are to be held behind closed doors.
“Egypt matches shouldn’t be held behind closed doors. They should be hosted by a neighbouring country instead,” the former national youth team manager stressed.
Led by American manager Bob Bradley, the Pharaohs have four important continental clashes in June. They will play Mozambique twice in World Cup qualifiers and the Central African Republic twice in African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
