Egyptian side Pyramids FC announced on Tuesday the sacking of Argentinean boss Rodolfo Arruabarrena and the appointment of Greek Takis Gonias as his replacement, two days after the club's elimination from the Confederation Cup semis.

Pyramids lost to Moroccan side Raja 4-5 on penalties to miss out on a place in the final of Africa's secondary club competition following a 0-0 aggregate draw on Sunday.

Arruabarrena was named as the team's coach last November, replacing Croatian coach Ante Cacic. However, the team's results were well below the expectations of the big-spending Emirati-owned club.

Pyramids are enduring their worst domestic run since they were bought by current owner Salem Al Shamsi in the summer of 2019.

They lie 10th in the league table with 34 points, 27 behind leaders Zamalek, although they still have five matches in hand.

Former Wadi Degla coach Gonias, who is known for his preference of a pretty brand of attacking football, will be tasked with reviving their fortunes.

Gonias had a previous experience in the Egyptian league, managing Degla for almost two years. He was sacked in February 2020 following a string of disappointing results.

He led the team in 54 games, winning 15, drawing 15 and suffering 24 defeats.

The 51-year-old was regarded as one of the best coaches in the Egyptian League, with his possession-based style earning him plaudits. However, Degla's squad was devoid of the kind of players who can successfully implement his strategy as the team faced relegation threat.

Gonias will make his debut in a mouthwatering league game against Cairo giants Ahly on Thursday.
