Zamalek will face mid-table Ceramica Cleopatra on Friday in the 32nd round of the Egyptian Premier League, hoping to take a step closer towards the title.
The team will need to win two of their remaining three games to win the league’s title.
Zamalek’s position has been bolstered by Ahly’s stumbles in two of their last three games, where Ahly drew against Ismaily and Talae El-Gaish. Before these slip-ups Ahly was leading the standings table, equal with the Whites in points, but with the head-to-head advantage.
With Friday’s game, the White Knights are hoping to extend their unbeaten streak to 17 games; their last defeat was to Ahly in April.
However, Zamalek struggled in their last game against bottom-of-the-table Wadi Degla, failing to score for most of the game despite dominating the ball. They were only saved by Marwan Hamdi’s header, which gave the win to the Whites.
After winning their last three games, Ceramica Cleopatra is not expected to be an easy opponent for Zamalek either. They possess a good squad despite losing Ahmed Yasser Rayan, who flew to Turkey to join Altay on loan, most notably skilled ex-Zamalek midfielder Mohamed Ibrahim, ex-Ahly forward Mido Gaber, and their tank striker Shady Hussein.
Zamalek are now leading the standings table with 73 points after 31 matches, while Cleopatra are in ninth place with 38 points after the same number of games.
