Ahly club’s management decided to fine all of the team’s players and technical staff members after losing the Egyptian Super Cup match to Talae El-Geish on Tuesday, the club announced later on the same day.

Unfancied Talae El-Geish caused a huge upset after beating Cairo powerhouse Ahly 3-2 in the penalties stage following a 0-0 draw on Tuesday, claiming their first ever Super Cup title.

“Amid the management’s [desire] for the team to achieve the club and fans’ ambitions, Ahly President Mahmoud El-Khatib decided to impose a EGP 300,000 fine on every player and also the entire technical staff after the team’s [recent] performance against Talae El-Geish,” Ahly revealed in a statement on their official website.

“The performance in the Super Cup match wasn’t suitable at all in comparison to the great skills of the players and the technical, medical, and managerial staffs,” the statement added.

Additionally, Ahly’s management announced they will be taking other actions in the same direction to restore the team’s performance without disclosing further details.

This edition of the Super Cup was due to be played before the beginning of last season but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This defeat marks the second title for Ahly to lose in less than a month after their Cairo archrivals, Zamalek, were crowned Premier League champions recently, increasing pressure on South African coach Pitso Mosimane before the new season gets underway.

Ahly have a record 11 Super Cup titles under their belt, followed by Zamalek with only four.
