The 32-year old keeper started the game but was forced to quit the game midway through the first half due to an apparent hamstring injury.

"El-Shennawi underwent scans immediately after his return and the results showed a tear in his hamstring that will require four to five weeks of treatment and rehabilitation" Ahly's chief of medical staff told the club's website on Tuesday.

El-Shennawi's injury has created a lot of controversy especially as the player seemed angry and involved in a brief argument with Egypt's goalkeeping coach Essam El-Hadary. It was reported that he felt some pain prior to the game but the team's football director Wael Gomaa has confirmed that El Shennawi's tests were all positive before the game and that he was a 100% fit.

The injury of El Shennawy comes as a big blow for Ahly who will start their African campaign this weekend and also the league on 25 October as he might also miss the Cairo derby against Zamalek set for the third match day.
