Egypt club Ismaily has appointed Sabry El-Meniawy as head coach to succeed Mahmoud Gaber, who resigned due to illness, the coastal club revealed Saturday.

"El-Meniawy was selected by the majority of board members after studying the CVs of a number of other candidates. The board thinks El-Meniawy is the best choice," the club revealed in a statement on its official website.

Last week, Gaber announced he would not continue in charge of Ismaily due to illness.

Formerly coach of second division club Aluminium, El-Meniawy will be eager to prove his worth as he has not managed a club in top flight before.

All Egyptian football activities were suspended after the Port Said football disaster that killed more than 70 people at a match on 1 February.

Ismaily is facing a major financial crisis, and lost a number of stars who departed because they didn't receive their financial dues.
