Egypt's Pyramids FC wasted a plethora of goal-scoring chances but still did enough to defeat DR Congo's Maniema Union 1-0 in Cairo and reach the African Confederation Cup group stage on Sunday.

Winger Ibrahim Adel scored the winner on 36 minutes as Pyramids completed a 2-0 aggregate victory over Maniema Union in the Confederation Cup playoff.

They joined fellow Egyptian side Masry in the group stage after the Port Said-based club defeated Nigeria's Rivers United 1-0 to sneak through on the away goal rule following a 2-2 aggregate draw.

"We did our best but were unlucky in front of goal. But thankfully, we did enough to go through and this what matters most," Adel said in a pitch-side interview after the game.

Pyramids were dominant throughout, although they were guilty of some glaring misses.

Palestinian striker Mahmoud Wadi had a header cleared off the line early on and Burkinabe forward Eric Traore fired a low shot just wide from the edge of the area.

Adel broke the resistance of Maniema Union when he was played in by a superb defence-splitting pass from winger Ramadan Sobhi to drill home past the advancing keeper.

Pyramids wasted further goal-scoring opportunities in the second half, with Adel and Sobhi both missing easy chances following one-on-one situations.

They could have been punished had it not been for a couple of key saves from keeper Sherif Ekramy, including one three minutes past the hour mark when he smothered a close-range shot from Maxi Nzengeli.

Substitute Ricky Tulengi also rattled the crossbar with fierce shot two minutes from time.
