The Reds finished their first game in the group stage with a goalless draw against hosts Al-Hilal, in the game which was held behind closed doors due to security concerns.

“Draw against Al-Hilal is satisfactory. Our team came to Sudan to win, and we played in the second half better than the first half,” Mosimane told post-match press conference.

Mosimane seemed to call on the referee to book one of the Al-Hilal players after aggressive tackling, but, in the absence of VAR review in preliminary rounds until semifinals, to no avail.

"How could there be no VAR in the Champions League group round?" Mosimane demanded.

Ahly, the Africa champions in the last two years, are vying for a record setting three trophies in a row.

“Al-Hilal are better in the current season in comparison to last season, Ahly had the chance to score and change the score when Mohamed ‘Afsha’ Magdy shot hit the post in the second half,” he added.

The 57-year-old coach stressed that that Group A has very competitive teams, stressing on that the team will fight to qualify to the knockout stage of the African tournament.

Ahly and Al-Hilal now have one point each in the group that also includes Sudan’s Al-Merrikh and South African side Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mosimane said the team will now close the page of Al-Hilal match to concentrate on the upcoming game against Maqassa in the domestic league.

The Reds come second at the schedule in the league with 19 points after seven games as they eye a 43rd title after conceding the trophy to arch-rivals Zamalek last year.
