Zamalek’s new coach Jesualdo Ferreira said his players are determined to beat Wydad of Morocco on Friday to revive their hopes in the African Champions League.

“Wydad won the away leg 3-1. That doesn’t mean we must win by three also, but we want to win this game,” the Portuguese tactician told a news conference in Cairo.

Zamalek are in a must-win situation after a struggling start of their group stage campaign, as they lay third in Group D with just two points after three games, behind leaders Petro Atletico (7 points) and Wydad of Casablanca (6 points).

Veteran coach Ferreira was rehired last week to help the team turn its fortune around.

The 75-year-old coach led the team to the domestic double during his first tenure in 2015.

“I have been here for three days. I cannot compare between this generation and the one I had during my previous reign. But I will do exactly what I did before and each player will have tasks to fulfil,” he added.

The former Porto and Sporting coach has also asked for VAR implementation in all Champions League games.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said that VAR will be used starting from the quarter finals games only.

“VAR should also be used in the group stage. It is very important to ensure justice. I know there are some stadiums where this technology is not present, but this issue should be solved. It is important for African football development,” he concluded.
