Zamalek were eyeing a consolation win after a poor run in Group D saw them exit the Champions League at the group-stage for the second season running but they could not find a breakthrough against Atletico.

Clear-cut chances were scarce throughout but Zamalek could have still grabbed a win, having relatively appeared in a better shape in their second match under veteran Portuguese boss Jesualdo Ferreira, who returned to the club for a second stint.

Ferreira urged a response after his first match saw Zamalek lose 1-0 at home to Morocco's Wydad and they set about probing Atletico's defence.

Zamalek's best first-half chance fell to defender Mohamed Abdel-Ghani, who headed against the bar on 25 minutes.

Playmaker Youssef 'Obama' Ibrahim found the net with a far-post header in the second half but was flagged for offside.

The hosts also had some chances, with Yano sending a free header just wide for their best opportunity in the second half.

Atletico remain on top of the group with 11 points, although second-placed Wydad (nine points) can overtake them on the summit if they beat Angola's Sagrada Esperanca (one point) later on Saturday.

Zamalek, who lost twice and drew three times, lie third with three points.
