Zizo stars again as Zamalek stroll past 10-man Ittihad

Zamalek moved four points clear on top, at least until Ahly play their rescheduled matches, when in-form winger Ahmed Zizo scored and dished out an assist in an easy 2-0 win over Ittihad of Alexandria in the Egyptian Premier League on Tuesday.

Zizo, Zamalek's standout performer so far this season and the league's current leading scorer with nine goals, gave his side an early lead with a ferocious drive that went in off the underside of the bar.

His inswinging corner set up defender Mohamed Abdel-Ghani for a second with seven minutes remaining, with Zamalek hardly breaking a sweat.

The visitors were largely helped by the dismissal of Ittihad's Burkinabe midfielder Saidou Simpore, who received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Zizo's ankle following a VAR review just before halftime.

Despite their numerical advantage, Zamalek were content to keep possession without really threatening their feeble opponents.

The White Knights, who were held to a 0-0 draw by top-flight debutants Pharco in their previous game, have 35 points, four ahead of Ahly, who still have three matches in hand.

Ittihad, who extended their winless run to eight games, dropped to the 12th spot with 15 points.

The Alexandria-based club had the first scare when Ghanaian forward Benjamin Boateng broke clear following a long pass, only to be closed down by a couple of defenders after he dithered on the ball

Zamalek then went ahead in the 12th minute when Zizo's right-foot piledriver from 25 yards struck the bar and fell just past the goal-line.

Zizo went close again with a curling free-kick but Zamalek still lacked imagination, with the absence of suspended winger Achraf Bencharki depriving them of their most creative option.

In the second half, Ittihad could have stunned Zamalek with 10 men when Karim Mamdouh volleyed just wide from inside the area in the 72nd minute.

However, Abdel-Ghani ensured Zamalek's win when he rose between two markers to head home Zizo's corner.
