Egyptian league holders Zamalek officially requested the sports ministry change the venue of Sunday’s anticipated derby against arch-rivals Ahly and also to play the game behind closed doors.

The Reds are supposed to host the Whites at their home venue WE Al-Ahly Stadium in a postponed game from week 20 of the Egyptian Premier League.

“We were surprised that Sunday’s game will be played amid the presence of 4,000 fans for Ahly and about 1,500 for Zamalek and that does not ensure equality as the first round game between both teams was played behind closed doors,” Zamalek said in an official letter for the sports ministry.

Last November, Ahly defeated Zamalek 5-3 in the first round of the domestic competition at Cairo's International Stadium without fans.

“Cairo stadium is the main venue for hosting the two teams’ matches and it is the venue that hosted the last game and so we want to move the game to the same stadium,” the Zamalek letter added.

After 22 games, Zamalek lead the league table with 44 points from 20 matches, one point behind second-placed Pyaramids FC who played one game more.

Ahly is in third place with 40 points, but from 17 matches played so far.
