The White Knights — who are leading the league’s table with 51 points after 23 matches — will be trying to maintain their undefeated streak and widen the gap with archrivals Ahly.
“The coming league games will be difficult and the players have to do their best to achieve the victory to defend the title,” Zamalek coach Jesualdo Ferreira was quoted as saying on the club’s official website.
The veteran Portuguese coach directed the previous league 3-2 win over Ceramica Cleopatra without his regular starters at the back, since left backs Mohamed Abdel Shafy and Ahmed Fatouh, right backs Hamza Mathlouthi and Hazem Emam, and central defenders Mahmoud Alaa and Mohamed Abdel Ghany are all out of commission, leaving only international centre back Mahmoud ‘El-Wensh’ Hamdy in the squad.
“The previous games witnessed the absence of more players, so we called up young players to fill in the fallen places in the squad,” Ferreira added.
Zamalek’s arch-rivals Ahly now lie third on the league table with 45 points, six points behind the Whites, who have played two matches more.
“We have to concentrate on our games and win without paying attention to the results of our opponents,” the Portuguese coach said.
Meanwhile, Arab contractors are suffering in the relegation zone as they are in 16th place on the table with 20 points.
