An outstanding first half performance from the Whites saw them go 2-0 up with goals from Ahmed “Zizo” El Sayed and Emam Ashour on 6 and 30 minutes.
Ahly have regained their composure in the second half and Hossam Hassan pulled one back in the 55th minute but that was no more than a consolation goal.
The Whites have won their 28th title and completed their fourth domestic double after 1959/60, 1987/88 and 2014/15.
A special milestone for Portuguese coach Jesualdo Ferreira who masterminded their previous achievment in 2015.
Early goals
A blunder from keeper Mohamed El Shennawy allowed Zamalek to grab an early lead after only six minutes. Tunisian striker Seifeddine Jaziri skipped past the advancing keeper and crossed the ball to Zizo in the area who headed the opener in an empty net.
The Whites maintained their blistering start with a vibrant Achraf Bencharki keeping Ahly defenders on their toes.
Ashour doubled his team’s lead with an excellent curler after an exchange of pass with Zizo on the edge of the area.
Zamalek could have extended their lead but El Shennawi redeemed himself with some fine saves to deny close chances from Bencharki and Mahmoud “El Wensh” Hamdi.
A better half for Ahly
The second half was a different affair. Ahly coach Ricardo Soares made three substitutions at the break bringing in Walid Soliman, Mohamed Mahmoud and Mohamed Abdel-Moneim to switch to a 3-4-3 formation.
The Reds dominated possession as Zamalek sat back on defence to protect their lead.
Mohamed Mahmoud rose above his marker to head the ball to Hossam Hassan who skipped past keeper Mohamed Awaad and score in the empty net.
Ahly pressed forward to grab the equaliser but Hassan, Soliman and Ahmed Abdel-Kader lacked precision in the final touch.
