Ahly s Portuguese coach Ricardo Soares
“The team achieved their target by snatching the points of the game against Maqassa to march on in the race for the league title,” the 47-year-old Soares told the post game press conference.
Ahly kept their hopes of winning the Egyptian league title alive after claiming an easy 1-0 win over bottom side Maqassa at Military Academy stadium in Cairo on Wednesday.
“The victory over Maqassa came at an important time due the tight schedule and injuries but the most important thing for the team is the three points of the game,” the Portuguese coach added.
“Ahly dominated the game against Maqassa and lost more scoring chances during the game, so the victory will give the players more confidence,” Soares said.
The Red Devils’ first choice goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawi picked-up a head injury in the last few seconds of the first half and was replaced during the break.
“It is [too] early to determine the seriousness of the injury of El-Shennawi and [whether his situation will prevent him] from taking part in the coming game,” the Ahly coach said.
The Cairo giants are third in the league table with 54 points, six behind leaders Zamalek who played one match more.
Ahly are scheduled to face Arab Contractors in a rescheduled game on Saturday.
