Preview: Can Ahly coach Soares save his job?

All indications are that the days of Ahly coach Ricardo Soares are numbered, but he will be looking to help the team win the last two games of a disappointing Egyptian Premier League season to keep alive his slim chances of staying on.

Ahly meet Talae El-Geish in the league's penultimate game on Saturday with Soares' future once again under scrutiny as the club also battle with Pyramids FC for a runners-up spot.

The Portuguese arrived two months ago but failed to spark a revival at the ailing club, who lost the league title to perennial Cairo rivals Zamalek for a second consecutive season.

He won only eight matches out of 15 under his guidance, drawing five and losing twice.

He could be excused for having to field a second-string team, including some youngsters, to comply with a decision from the club's board after the team had lost hope of competing for the title.

However, the board and fans alike feel he had not made enough progress. Members of a company that oversees football affairs at Ahly have stepped down, apparently in protest at a looming board decision to dispense with Soares.

Any decision to relieve him of his duties will appear harsh, given that he had not had enough time to make an impact. He looked tensed following the 2-0 win over Enppi last Wednesday, refusing to take questions during the post-game news conference.

"In normal circumstances, Ahly will win all titles next season," he said.

Ahly have no option but to beat El-Geish if they are to stay in hunt for a second-place finish. Pyramids moved four points clear of Ahly with a 2-0 win over Ceramica Cleopatra on Friday.

The Red Devils have not finished out of the top two since the 1982-83 season.
