The Egyptian Premier League will continue as normal during the anticipated World Cup that will be played from 20 November to 18 December in Qatar, Egyptian Football Association (EFA) board member Amer Hussein said on Sunday.

“The new season will start on 17 or 18 October and the competition will continue during the World Cup,” Hussein told Egyptian TV channel Al Hayat.

“This will be for the sake of the clubs as we want to end the competition on time without any postponements and also to return with the transfer window period back to normal dates.”

“I presented a proposal for the league schedule to the Premier League and the board is expected to take the final decision regarding the issue in its meeting in the coming hours,” added Hussein, who is also the supervisor of the competitions’ sector at the Egyptian Premier League.

The Algerian Football Association announced on Saturday that the domestic league would not stop during the World Cup.

Both countries’ decisions are not contrary to FIFA regulations, according to Hussein

“I contacted the Algerian Football Association and he confirmed to me that it is an internal decision that does not need contacting FIFA,” Hussein explained.

Egypt’s national team did not qualify for the prestigious tournament in Qatar and only three foreign players from the Egyptian league are expected to participate in its matches.

Tunisia’s trio of left-back Ali Maaloul (Ahly), striker Seif Jaziri (Zamalek) and fullback Hamza Mathlouthi (Zamalek) are the only ones who will play in Qatar.

Their anticipated absence has not any of their clubs to call for a postponement, according to Hussein.

“According to the Egyptian league regulations, the club can only ask for games’ postponement during World Cup in cases when they have more than two players playing in the big competition. So Ahly and Zamalek cannot call for postponements and if they did the final decision will be taken by the Premier league board,” he concluded.
