Zamalek announce departure of Zakaria El-Wardi amicably due to Super Cup blues

Zamalek president, Mortada Mansour announced Thursday the departure of the recently-signed Moroccan midfielder Zakaria El-Wardi amicably based on the players request.

"Zakaria El-Wardi asked to leave Zamalek because he could not bear the blame he was exposed to after the Super Cup match against Ahly." Mortada Mansour said.

The 24-year-old garnered fans' ire after his mis-placed pass in the 39th minute of the the Egyptian Super Cup match was capitalised on by Red Devils forward Bruno Savio who put Ahly ahead before going on to win the game 2-0.

"El -Wardi informed us of his desire to leave a while ago. Football supervisor Amir Mortada tried to persuade him to retract his decision but to no avail. The contract was terminated amicably. El-Wardi will repay the contract deposit," the Zamalek president added.

El-Wardi joined Zamalek in the summer transfer window from Moroccan club Raja Casablanca where he spent the last three seasons, scoring twice in 112 appearances in all competitions.

 In four seasons with Raja, El-Wardi won the African Super Cup in 2019, Moroccan league title in 2020 and the African Confederation Cup title in 2021.
