Ahly right-back Akram Tawfik, who spent most of 2022 recovering from a knee injury, will fly to Austria to undergo surgery to repair a new injury to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

“Ahly’s medical staff are preparing the player’s travel procedures to Austria to undergo surgery there,” read a statement published on Ahly’s official website early on Sunday.

Tawfik sustained the injury during a training session with the team on Friday.

“Tawfik will undergo the surgery before the end of the ongoing month,” Ahly’s statement concluded.

Tawfik returned to Ahly squad ahead of the start of the Egyptian Premier League season in October, making 11 appearances with the Red Devils so far.

He had been absent from the field since tearing his ACL during national team duty in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) last January.
