Aswan stun Zamalek to first league defeat

Ahram Online , Monday 2 Jan 2023

Newly promoted side Aswan stunned Zamalek 2-1 on Monday, handing the two-time defending champions their first defeat of the season.

Set pieces were the key, as Mohamed Abdel-Ghani and Dilson converted two free kicks for Aswan, while the Whites needed a corner to allow Hossam Abdel-Meguid to score their consolation’s goal in the 56th minute.

This was Aswan’s third win in a row after previous victories over Enppi 2-0 and Masry 2-1, continuing a revival after their catastrophic start of the season that saw them concede three straight defeats.

Coach Ayman El-Ramadi is hailed as a local hero after taking the team following the first three games and rising with them to 7th place on the table with 15 points after 11 games.

Zamalek are co-leaders with 24 points with Ahly, who will face Pyramids FC later in the day.

3 set pieces, 3 goals

Aswan were off to a blistering start when Abdel-Ghani converted a corner into his own nets. The hosts maintained their pressure early in the game and dominated every area of play.

They were unlucky to see two attempts from Dilson and Hammad Khaled denied by the post.

Seconds before the break, Dilson rose above the defence to convert another corner and double his team’s lead.

After the break, Zamalek pressed forward and Abdel-Meguid pulled one back in the 56th minute.

Coach Jesualdo Ferreira brought in all his attacking cards with the likes of Youssef “Obama” Ibrahim, Beninese striker Samson Akinyoola and Youssef Nabih, who has been a key figure for Zamalek in recent games, scoring four goals in eight appearances mostly as a substitute.

However, Aswan’s breakaways were dangerous as Dilson, Ahmed Belhadj and Mohamed Nagy squandered several chances to kill the game.
