Zamalek extend winless run after draw with Ittihad

Zamalek extended their winless run to three matches after failing to break down Ittihad of Alexandria in a 0-0 Egyptian Premier League draw on Wednesday to fall further behind in the title race.

Zamalek v Ittihad

The Cairo giants struggled for openings throughout and created their only clear-cut chance with 19 minutes remaining when a header from towering defender Hossam Abdel-Maguid went just wide.

Ittihad were content to sit back and nullify Zamalek's feeble attempts, with the stalemate ending their three-match losing streak.

Zamalek have now drawn twice and lost once in their past three games, giving Ahly the chance to open up a comfortable lead on top.

The White Knights lie third in the table, one behind second-placed Future FC and four adrift of leaders Ahly, who can extend their lead over their perennial Cairo rivals to seven points if they beat Masry on Thursday.

Ittihad moved up to fifth with 19 points from 13 matches.

The first half was a drab affair, with Zamalek having the lion's share of possession but finding it hard to mount any threats.

Some half-chances were no trouble for Ittihad's rearguard as Zamalek once again lacked creativity.

The introduction of veteran schemer Mahmoud Shikabala and promising forward Youssef Nabih in the second half did little to revitalize Zamalek's attack.

Ahmed Zizo fired over the crossbar on the turn before Abdel-Maguid wasted the game's best chance when his firm header narrowly missed the target after an inviting cross from Zizo.
