Pharaohs Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria
“In order to develop Egyptian Football you need to improve several aspects especially training methods and coaches formation. You must study and implement modern programs so you can level the game and compete at the highest level,” he told reporters during Sports Expo in Cairo.
Over the past decade, Egyptian football has been in decline as the Pharaohs failed to win any titles since their seventh record-extending African Cup in 2010.
Egypt have only qualified for the World Cup three times in their history in 1934, 1990 and 2018.
Except for Ahly, who have been a dominating force in African football, domestic clubs have been faltering on the continental level as Zamalek have only won a Confederation Cup title in 2019 over the past two decades.
“You must provide new trainings for coaches as you cannot have a good player without a good coach. Also you must rely more on young players and give them a chance, starting from the age of 16, to play in big games so they can live these atmospheres, progress and build their experience,” he added.
The issue has been compelling recently with the Egypt U-20 team on the brink of an early elimination from the African Championship held at home after poor displays.
“Local competitions must be more organised and fans back into the stadium to boost the players during the games,” he concluded.
Since the Coronavirus pandemic, the domestic competitions have been disturbed and the Egyptian Premier League is holding its third consecutive season without a proper break.
The number of fans that can attend local matches is limited to six thousand.
