Last season's Egyptian Premier League champions Zamalek were scheduled to face Egypt Cup winners Ahly in the Super Cup in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Zamalek’s President Mortada Mansour announced that the club board declined to participate in the match, citing various grievances with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) as the reason for the withdrawal.

These include the EFA's decision to appoint Egyptian referees for the Super Cup and the EFA disciplinary committee punishing him and Zamalek.

EFA board member Ihab Al-Komy said on Tuesday that the Egyptian football governing body will invite Egypt Cup runners-up Pyramids FC to play against Ahly according to tournament regulations if Zamalek’s withdrawal is officially confirmed.

The 12-time Super Cup champions Ahly are the holders after winning last year’s edition following a 2-0 win over Zamalek.
