Preview: Ahly out to avoid Pyramids FC's surprises and maintain unbeaten league run

Mahmoud Elassal , Saturday 22 Jul 2023

Egyptian Premier League champions Ahly will take on Pyramids FC on Sunday, with the main goal of maintaining their unbeaten league run after the Red Devils secured their 43rd title with five games remaining early this month.

The Red Devils took the trophy home on Wednesday after an inconsequential game against Haras El-Hodoud in the league.

With 82 points, Ahly is leading the table, 12 points ahead of Pyramids FC, who have played one more game.

The Red Devils have played 32 games out of 34 this season, winning 25 and drawing in seven.

Ahly coach Marcel Koller is expected to call up all his top players after rotating in the squad in the disappointing draw with Haras El-Hodoud.

Defenders Mohamed Abdel-Moneim, Mohamed Hany, and Yasser Ibrahim will also return to the squad after serving automatic bans due to accumulating cards.

Something to prove

Pyramids FC, who are currently in second place in the Egyptian Premier League table with 70 points, have already secured their place in the prestigious CAF Champions League.

However, the team has a double objective on Sunday: end Ahly's unbeaten record this year and avenge three losses to the champs in 2023.

Pyramids FC's talented winger Ramadan Sobhi remains doubtful for the game with a muscle injury that sidelined him since last June.

Upper hand

Ahly has beaten Pyramids FC on three different occasions in 2023.

In January, Ahly defeated Pyramids FC 3-0 in their home game in the Egyptian Premier League.

In April, the Red Devils beat Pyramids FC 2-1 in the Egypt Cup 2021-2022.

The Red Devils also defeated Pyramids FC 1-0 in the Egypt Super Cup 2021-2022 in May.
