Ahly announce departures of Lotfi, Hussein as squad reshuffle continues

Egyptian champions Ahly have announced the departures of backup goalkeeper Ali Lotfi and out-of-favour striker Shady Hussein, as coach Marcel Koller continues to reshuffle his squad.

Lotfi, 33, has left Ahly after a five-year spell since joining them from Enppi in 2018. He is reportedly set to join newly promoted side Zed FC, but the deal has yet to be announced.

Lotfi's future has been hanging in the balance as international goalkeeper and Ahly's number one choice, Mohamed El-Shennawy, had received offers from Saudi Arabia. However, local reports revealed that El-Shennawy has opted to stay at Ahly, paving the way for Lotfi's exit.

Mostafa Shobeir, who made a big impression in the CAF Champions League final, will now become second-choice goalkeeper, while Egypt U23 goalkeeper Hamza Alaa, who won the best goalkeeper award at the U23 Africa Cup of Nations, comes in third.

Hussein, meanwhile, will leave the club after just one season, having failed to convince Koller of his capabilities. The former Ceramica Cleopatra forward (30 years) played a total of 20 games with Ahly in all competitions, totalling only 763 minutes.

The Red Devils have now offloaded seven players following the transfers of Brazilian winger Bruno Savio, Mozambican forward Luis Miquissone, defender Ayman Ashraf, midfielder Hamdi Fathi, goalkeeper Lotfi, and strikers Hossam Hassan and Hussein.

Congolese striker Walter Bwalya and Egypt U23 winger Mostafa Saad among others may be nearing the exit door as Koller looks to make way for new additions.

Ahly have already signed international midfielder Emam Ashour from FC Midtjylland. The Cairo giants are still in the market for at least an attacker and a defender to bolster the squad ahead of next season.
