Zamalek's veteran fullback, Mohamed Abdel-Shafi, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, the team's doctor confirmed on Sunday.

The 38-year-old sustained the injury during Zamalek training last week and will undergo surgery to repair the ruptured ligament in Germany.

He joins his teammate defender Mahmoud 'El-Wench' Hamdi, who underwent the same surgery in Germany last week.

Abdel-Shafi's injury comes as a significant setback for the club, especially with fellow international fullback Ahmed Fatouh also sidelined due to a hamstring tear suffered during his participation with the Pharaohs in the outgoing Africa Cup of Nations.

The veteran fullback had initially announced his retirement last summer but later reversed his decision.

He has made eight appearances for the White Knights this season across all competitions.
