Ahly's Maaloul to have surgery after Achilles tendon tear

Ahly Tunisian fullback Ali Maaloul will undergo surgery on Monday to repair a partial tear of the Achilles tendon in his leg, the Cairo giants announced on Monday.

Maaloul was injured in Ahly's goalless draw at Esperance de Tunis on Saturday in the first leg of the Champions League final.

"Examinations showed a partial tear of the Achilles tendon in his leg," Ahly’s doctor told the club’s official website on Sunday.

"He will have surgery on Monday.

The future of the 34-year-old whose contract with the club expires this summer remains unclear.

Maaloul who joined Ahly in the summer of 2016 played a vital role with the club during his eight-year spell, scoring 51 goals and providing 83 assists in 281 appearances with the Red Devils.

Ahly will host Esperance de Tunis in the second leg of the Champions League final on Sunday with the Ted Devils are seeking their 12 th African trophy.
