Swiss coach Christian Gross, who is reportedly set to become Zamalek’s new coach, watched the game from the stands in anticipation of replacing Jose Gomes, who departed the club last week.
Gomes stunned the White Knights by terminating his contract to take up a coaching role at Saudi club Al-Fatth.
Assistant coach Ahmed Magdy, who is set to accompany the Portuguese coach to Saudi Arabia, managed the game against Masry, aiming to leave a positive memory with the team before his departure.
Zamalek started the game strongly, with Abdallah El-Saed and Nabil ‘Dunga’ Emad missing opportunities in the 8th and 9th minutes respectively.
They maintained their control with team’s Tunisian striker Seif Jaziri had a chance to open the scoring but his effort struck the crossbar in the 20th minute.
The second half saw an improved performance from Masry, although without posing a real threat.
Zizo broke the deadlock three minutes after the hour mark with a well-placed shot from the edge of the area.
Zamalek sought to control the game as they were content with their lead, while Masry's response fell short of equalizing the score.
This victory propelled Zamalek to the top of the group with seven points, three points ahead of Masry and Black Bulls, who both have four points.
Earlier in the day, Mozambican side Black Bulls defeated Enyimba of Nigeria 3-0.
Zamalek are scheduled to face Masry once again on the 5 th of January at the same stadium.
