Egyptian giants Zamalek have appointed on Monday Christian Gross as their new head coach, succeeding Portuguese coach Jose Gomes, who departed earlier this month.

“The Godfather has returned. Welcome, Christian Gross,” Zamalek wrote on their social media accounts.

The club did not disclose the duration or financial terms of Gross’ contract.

Gross arrived in Cairo on Sunday and watched Zamalek’s match against Masry from the stands.

His second stint at the club officially begins on Thursday when Zamalek face Ceramica Cleopatra in the Egyptian Premier League.

Gross first coached Zamalek during the 2018/19 season, leading them to the CAF Confederation Cup title — their first continental trophy in 16 years. However, his tenure ended after disagreements with then-chairman Mortada Mansour and failed negotiations over a contract extension.

Although Gross has been out of management since his last role at German side Schalke in 2021, Zamalek are banking on his experience to salvage the season following the Gomes’ abrupt departure earlier in December.
