Zamalek newly appointed coach Ayman El-Ramady said on Thursday he is proud to take charge of the Cairo giants and vowed to do his best to help the team recover from a disappointing season.

The 60-year-old was named head coach on Wednesday until the end of this season, following the departure of Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro, who left by mutual consent after a string of poor results.

Zamalek currently sit third in the Egyptian Premier League with 40 points, seven behind leaders Pyramids FC.

With only four matches remaining, the club's chances of winning the league or securing a CAF Champions League spot by finishing second are slim.

Zamalek were also knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup in the quarter-finals after a shock home defeat to South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC.

Their only remaining title hope this season lies in the Egypt Cup, where they are set to face Pyramids FC in the final on 5 June.

“I’m very proud to be working with a great club like Zamalek, one of the biggest in the Middle East,” El-Ramady told reporters on Thursday.

“I will do my best to help the team. I know time is not on our side, but I’m used to facing challenges.”

El-Ramady’s appointment has sparked controversy within the club, as he is not a former Zamalek player—a departure from tradition that has drawn criticism from several former coaches and players.

“I thank everyone who supported me, and even those who are against me,” he added.

“My only focus is to improve the team and prove my worth.”

El-Ramady will begin his tenure on Friday against Ceramica Cleopatra, the club he managed earlier this season.
