Defending champions Ahly are set to clash with Pyramids FC in the fifth matchday of the Egyptian Premier League at Cairo’s Al-Salam Stadium on Saturday, as the title holders grapple with a significant number of absentees due to injuries.

The Red Devils enter the match following a disappointing goalless draw by Ghazl El-Mahalla on Monday, marking their second league draw in three games with 5 points.

Coach Jose Riveiro faces a selection dilemma, with five players missing the game due to injuries. The defensive trio of Yassin Marei, Mohamed Shokry and Yasser Ibrahim, along with midfielder Marwan Attia, are all ruled out due to muscular injuries.

Midfield star and last season’s top scorer Emam Ashour may continue to miss out, as there are concerns about aggravating his injury, despite his return to training following shoulder surgery.

Riveiro will, however, rely on his formidable frontline, which includes standout performer Ahmed 'Zizo' El Sayed, who has contributed two goals and two assists. Moroccan winger Achraf Bencharki, international forward Mahmoud Trezeguet, and Mohamed Sherif have all proven difficult for opposing defenses to contain.

On the other hand, last season’s runners-up Pyramids FC have also had a sluggish start to the season, securing victory only once in their four games.

They have drawn twice against newly-promoted Wadi Degla and Masry, and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Modern Sport, leaving them with 5 points.

The CAF Champions League reigning champions are also dealing with their own injury woes, with talented winger Mostafa Fathi, midfielder Ramadan Sobhi, and defender Mahmoud Marei all sidelined.

To compound the challenges for Croatian coach Krunoslav Jurcic, Moroccan right-back Mohamed Chibi will be unavailable after receiving a red card during the defeat to Modern Sport.

Although matches between Ahly and Pyramids FC have become some of the biggest showdowns in Egyptian football, the Red Devils hold the upper hand in their head-to-head record, claiming 11 wins from their previous 23 encounters across all competitions, while the Sky Blues have emerged victorious in 6 games, with the remaining meetings ending in draws.
