Ahly coach Jose Riveiro acknowledged his side made “many mistakes” as the reigning champions slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Pyramids FC on Saturday, marking their first loss of the Egyptian Premier League season and adding to a rocky start to his tenure.

Speaking after the match at El-Salam Stadium, the Spaniard said his players had struggled to break down Pyramids’ well-organized defence.

“We had several chances in the first half and came close to equalising, but we were not successful,” Riveiro told reporters. He noted that absences had complicated preparations, but stressed they were no excuse for the performance.

Since taking charge this summer, Riveiro has overseen only one win in seven games across domestic and international competitions.

Saturday’s defeat, sealed by Moroccan midfielder Walid El-Karti’s brace, left Ahly on five points from four matches, dropping to 12th in the table, while Pyramids climbed to third with eight points.

The loss has raised concern within Ahly’s boardroom, with officials expected to review the team’s struggling form.

Fans expressed frustration during the game, some calling for Riveiro’s dismissal as the Red Devils endured their worst league start in recent memory.

“We understand the sadness of the supporters,” Riveiro said. “We are working to improve and will get better in the coming period.”

Ahly now face an international break, offering a chance to regroup before returning to league action. Still, pressure is already mounting on Riveiro as the champions aim to revive their season.
