Preview: Zamalek aim to dethrone Masry from Egyptian League summit

Zamalek will face Masry on Saturday in the sixth round of the Egyptian Premier League, with the Cairo giants aiming to return to winning ways and reclaim top spot in the standings.

Before the international break, Zamalek missed a chance to consolidate their position at the summit after a surprise 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Wadi Degla, allowing Masry to move into first place.

Zamalek sit second with 10 points, one behind the Port Said club and level with third-placed Modern Sport.

Despite strengthening their squad during the summer transfer window, the White Knights have struggled for consistency, with three wins, one draw and one loss, raising doubts over their title credentials.

Belgian head coach Yannick Ferrera will do without key defender Mahmoud ‘El-Wensh’ Hamdi due to suspension, while midfielder Mohamed Shehata remains sidelined through injury.

Mahmoud Gihad and Ahmed Rabea also remain unavailable as they continue their recovery.

Masry, meanwhile, are unbeaten this season with four wins and a draw under Tunisian coach Nabil Kouki.

Algerian midfielder Abderrahim Deghmoum, 26, has been a standout performer, leading the league’s scoring charts with four goals and impressing in a more prominent role and showcasing his versatility in wider areas of the pitch.
