Hundreds of Ultras Ahlawy, a group of die-hard Ahly fans, invaded the club’s headquarters in Cairo on Wednesday to call for the departure of chairman Hassan Hamdy, who is questioned over illegal profiteering charges.

It is the third time Ahly’s supporters storm the club in five weeks, marking their growing frustration over the board’s handling of the notorious Port Said case.

Ultras Ahlawy has repeatedly accused the board of not doing enough to pressure Egyptian authorities into punishing the culprits of Egypt’s worst-ever football disaster, which left over 70 fans killed in February.

Their demands included the resignation of the entire board, including chairman Hamdy who was questioned on Tuesday by Egypt’s Illicit Gains Authority (IGA) on charges of illegally accumulating wealth.

The IGA imposed a travel ban on Hamdy, who has been Ahly’s chairman since iconic president Saleh Selim died in 2002, after he failed to explain how he had accumulated around LE500 million during his time as the chairman of Al-Ahram's advertising agency.

Ultras Ahlawy also deem Hamdy as “part of the previous infamous regime of Mubarak," accusing him of fraud.

They hurled a barrage of insults against him on Wednesday amid little security presence in front of the club’s headquarters in Al-Gezira district, Cairo.

Ahly are preparing for a crucial clash against Nigeria’s Sunshine Stars in the second leg of the African Champions League semi-final. The match will take place in Cairo on 21 October.

The Red Devils are favourites to reach the final after holding Sunshine Stars to a thrilling 3-3 draw in the first leg in Nigeria.
