The sixth round of the Egyptian Premier League saw defending champions Ahly continue their frustrating run, while rivals Zamalek seized the league summit.

Egyptian league 6th round

Four teams suffered their first defeats, and 21 goals were scored, the highest total in a single round since the season began.

Ahram Online breaks down five key talking points from the round:

Zamalek snatch league summit

After suffering their first league defeat to Wadi Degla in the previous round, Zamalek bounced back emphatically with a commanding 3-0 victory over Masry. The fans were rejoiced by the convincing win against a strong opponent but mostly by the impressive performance after a series of below-par displays.

The win propelled the Cairo-based side to the top of the table with 13 points from six games, pushing Masry to second place with 11 points.

Ahly’s slump continues, Ashour returns

It could not be more wrong for Ahly. The defending champions struggle continues as they stumbled against Ennpi (1-1) to drop to 15th with six points.

The match also marked the season debut of influential midfielder Emam Ashour, who came on as a second-half substitute after nearly 90 days recovering from clavicle surgery.

The night could only get worse with the injuries of Ahmed "Zizo" El Sayed and Emam Ashour.

Four teams suffer first loss

Four sides suffered their first defeats of the season in the sixth round.

Masry’s loss to Zamalek was joined by Petrojet’s heavy 3-0 defeat to NBE Club, Gouna’s 2-1 loss to Haras El-Hodoud, and Smouha’s 1-0 defeat against Ceramica Cleopatra.

NBE Club secured their first win of the season in their first match under new coach Ayman El-Ramady. Only Ghazl El Mahalla remain unbeaten until now.

Best goal tally

The sixth round produced 21 goals across 10 matches, an average of 2.1 goals per game, the highest scoring round since the season began.

Previous rounds had tallies of 15, 18, and 19 goals, respectively. Only one fixture ended goalless, with Pharco FC and Ittihad Alexandria playing out a 0-0 draw.

Masry’s Algerian forward Abderrahim Deghmoum remains the league’s top scorer with four goals despite failing to score against Zamalek.

Mahalla misses clean sheet streak

Ghazl El Mahalla’s impressive defensive record came to an end after five consecutive clean sheets as they drew 1-1 with Arab Contractors.

The team had started the season with four goalless draws before scoring their first goal and securing their first win in the previous round’s 3-0 victory over Ismaily.

Mahalla remain unbeaten and sit ninth with eight points.
