Alvina-less Zamalek aim to extend league lead at the expense of Gouna

Zamalek will look to strengthen their position at the top of the Egyptian Premier League when they host Gouna on Tuesday at Cairo Stadium.

The White Knights currently lead the standings with 16 points and can move four points clear at the summit with a win, following second-placed Masry’s goalless draw with Pharco FC, which left them on 15 points.

However, Zamalek will be without two key players — Brazilian winger Juan Alvina and Moroccan fullback Mahmoud Bentayeg.

Alvina picked up a deliberate third yellow card during Zamalek’s 2-0 victory over Ismaily, making him eligible for the Cairo derby against Ahly on Monday, 29 September.

The tactical decision could prove costly, given the winger's influence in attack.

Since making his debut, the 22-year-old has emerged as Zamalek’s most effective offensive weapon, contributing to four of the nine goals scored during his appearances.

His pace and creativity on the right flank have made him a standout performer and a key source of inspiration.

Bentayeg will also miss the match due to suspension, while fellow fullback Omar Gaber is a major doubt after sustaining an ankle injury in the win over Ismaily — compounding selection headaches for coach Yannick Ferrera.

Despite the setbacks, Ferrera expressed confidence in his squad’s depth ahead of the fixture.

“I trust the players available to step up and deliver,” the Belgian coach said.

Zamalek have yet to register three consecutive league victories this season and will be eager to hit that mark on Tuesday.

Gouna, currently 16th with seven points, opened their campaign with a win over newly-promoted Kahrabet Ismailya.

However, that remains their only victory so far, as they have drawn four matches and suffered one defeat, against Haras El-Hodoud.

Despite their lowly position, Gouna are expected to pose a stiff challenge, with their resilient performances making them a tricky opponent for the league leaders.
